Summer is here. That means travel, time off, and logging in for “just for a minute” while you’re away. Checking email from the beach or hopping on a quick call from the airport is pretty normal these days. But doing it the wrong way can put your company (and your data) at risk.
The good news? Staying secure while you’re away isn’t complicated. You just need to be intentional. Here are 5 simple ways to keep your work secure while you enjoy your vacation.
1. Use a VPN or Mobile Hotspot
Hotels. Coffee shops. Airports. They all proclaim free WiFi. Sure, they’re convenient, but how safe are they? Historically, these public WiFi networks are also some of the least secure you’ll ever use. These are a few options to reduce your exposure:
1. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure tunnel between your device and your company’s systems. That means even if someone is snooping on the same network, they can’t see your data.
2. Using your Phone's hotspot will use the data from your cell phone to give your laptop the internet access it needs through a trusted device.
Simple rule:
If you’re not on your home or office network, turn on your VPN or connect with a hotspot before logging into anything work-related.
2. Always use MFA
Unfortunately, passwords alone aren’t enough anymore. MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) adds a second layer of protection, usually a code on your phone or an approval through an app.
3. Question Urgency
You're relaxed. The kids are fighting for your attention, and you see a work email come in labeled "URGENT".
When you are distracted or on-the-go, it’s easier to miss red flags. Attackers know this. That’s why phishing emails often spike during holidays and travel seasons.
Watch out for:
- “Urgent” emails that want you to act fast
- Unexpected file attachments
- Login links that don’t look quite right
When in doubt, don’t click. It’s always better to pause and double-check the link, the sender, even the ask. It's much better than cleaning up a security issue later.
4. Keep your Devices Updated
Before you leave, take a few minutes to update your phone, tablets, and apps. Yes, all of them. Updates don't just bring new emojis, more often than not they fix security gaps that attackers are actively looking for.
Quick checklist:
- Install system updates
- Update your browser
- Update apps (Teams, email, CRM, etc.)
- Restart your device
It’s one of the easiest ways to protect yourself, and it takes less than 30 minutes.
5. Lock it Up
It only takes a second for a device to be stolen or accessed, especially in busy places like airports or hotels. Stepping away, even for a quick minute, can leave your company's data at risk.
Get in the habit of:
- Locking your screen when you step away
- Using strong passwords or biometric lock (fingerprint/face)
- Keeping devices in your carry-on, not checked luggage
And if you do lose a device, report it right away so your IT team can secure your access.
You should be able to enjoy your vacation without worrying about work security. A few small habits like using a VPN, enabling MFA, and staying up to date can make a huge difference.
So go ahead. Check what you need then get back to enjoying your hard-earned time off.
